What Are the Beauty Benefits of a Green Tea Mask?

Who doesn’t love a good face mask? They are such a good way to pamper yourself when your skin is in need of a good revamping. I know all you fellow skincare addicts know that horrible but inevitable moment when we can feel how our skin is dehydrated, dirty, rough, and just plain gross. I mean, it happens, right?

After a while of just living life, your skin tends to feel like it needs some major TLC. We can’t always go to a dermatologist for some skin-loving because for one, it’s not that cheap! And who has time for that anyway?

A green tea face mask will incorporate a range of added benefits into this common skin care routine. We will explore them here.

It Helps Fight and Prevent Breakouts

The antibacterial properties of green tea are well known to those who drink the equivalent beverage. The catechinsin help prevent bacteria that cause coughs, colds, other sicknesses, and yes, acne.

Acne can be caused by bacteria getting into the pores of your skin where a pimple then starts forming. Bacteria-caused acne is very common and can be prevented by treating it with the antibacterial properties that green tea has.

A green tea face mask will cleanse your pores and prevent bacteria from getting in.This also helps the existing acne heal and go away.

Catechins in green tea also can act as an anti-inflammatory. These catechins will help reduce the redness and inflammation that is caused by breakouts.

Hint: Follow up your green tea face mask with some actual green tea you can drink. If your breakouts are caused by hormonal imbalances, the catechins can also regulate that and prevent your breakouts.

It Improves Your Overall Skin Complexion

Green tea is absolutely loaded with antioxidants that flushes out the toxins that you have consumed. This is why it can help you lose weight faster and get you feeling fresh and energized. These antioxidants also work wonders when you apply a green tea mask on your face.

The antioxidants in green tea flushes out the toxins that may have gathered on your face and helps even out discoloration, heal scars, and get rid of blemishes. This is great for those with hyperpigmentation or scarring from old breakouts that take so long to go away.

The flushing of toxins from your face caused by the green tea will then take off the dead and unhealthy skin caused by the hyperpigmentation. This will help lighten those areas faster and improve your overall skin complexion.

Reduces Dark Circles and Puffiness Around Eyes

The antioxidants in green tea include what are called “tannins”. This is what causes the slight bitterness in the taste of the tea. Tannins can actually act as an astringent when applied to the face.

It can also help reduce swelling and shrink blood vessels around your eye area, making them look fresh and awake without any puffiness. The antioxidants and tannins also help lighten the skin around your eyes to get rid of those dark circles.

Green tea also contains vitamin K, which also further helps lighten the skin around your eyes. This is basically a cheaper but still effective version of an eye cream that you can use.

It’s Great for Anti-Aging Benefits

One of the main culprits of aging are called free radicals. Free radicals are nasty little things that you really, really don’t want inside of your body. Once formed, these guys can do significant damage to your health including the possibility of causing cancer.

These free radicals basically damage healthy cells in your body which then leads to certain illnesses and premature aging. The natural defense your body has to these free radicals are the antioxidants that it produces, but of course, it certainly is a big help and sometimes, necessary to give a boost with some powerful antioxidants like those found in green tea.

These pesky free radicals age your skin by damaging healthy skin cells, depleting them of oxygen, and breaking down collagen which is what helps your skin produce new and healthy cells.

Green tea has some super powerful antioxidants that battle these free radicals and prevent and treat the signs of aging that have appeared on your face such as sagging skin, age spots, wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration from sun damage.

Heals Sun Damage

If you like taking advice from skincare gurus and dermatologists, then you will know that probably the number one advice they give you is to always protect your face from the sun.And while that is always one of the most important things to do, let’s admit it, it doesn’t always happen.

There are occasions on holiday or even just normal days out and about that it can slip your mind to put SPF on and end up with sun damaged or sunburnt skin.

Green tea contains tannic acid, theobromine, and polyphenols that can reduce the irritation and heal sunburnt skin. It can also diminish the damage done by harmful UV rays from the sun and even protect against it.

Studies also show that green tea can even prevent a certain type of skin cancer.

It Minimizes Open Pores

Open pores are not just a nuisance to look at (and to put make up over!), they are also in danger of accumulating dirt and bacteria which can lead to blackheads and breakouts.

Green tea has powerful antioxidants and astringent properties that can help shrink those open or enlarged pores so dirt and bacteria does not get into them. This will prevent any future breakouts and give your skin a tight and smooth appearance (kind of like natural primer!).

It Can Help Exfoliate Your Skin

We all know that the green tea we actually drink is made of tiny little dried out leaves that have a slightly rough texture. These leaves along with the acids it contains can help exfoliate the skin and get rid of those dead skin cells to make room for new skin cells to replace them. Exfoliation will make your skin look and feel smooth and soft, as well as help lighten the discoloration caused by hyperpigmentation.
