What Is Rice Water and What Are Its Beauty Benefits?

Beauty and skincare treatment lures people into trying out all sorts of weird and wonderful things in the pursuit of improved skin, hair and body appearance.

People are looking for natural ways to get the results that they want and a lot of beauty products contain ingredients that are easily bought at the supermarket, or just lying around the kitchen already. It makes sense that you can just use the pure, organic, unaltered ingredient on your face for a nice little home remedy.

Rice is a very popular staple food loved around the world because it goes so well with so many dishes. Especially in Asian countries where they eat it pretty much every day. But did you know that rice is not just an amazing side dish? It can also be used as pampering treatment for both your skin and hair!

Rice water is one of the best kept secrets that the women in Asia use to take care of their skin and hair. The women in Japan, China, and Southeast Asia have known the benefits of rice water for ages, while other parts of the world are only starting to discover it.

No wonder women in Asia have such lovely skin and hair!

Rice water is rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish the hair and skin wonderfully, and is also one of the most simplemethods you can use. All you need is rice and water! It is such an easy, breezy method that you can do once and have it last you for ages.

So, what is rice water and what are its beauty benefits? Here is the tea on rice water.

What is Rice Water?

rice-water

In some places known as “am”, rice water is that liquid that is left over when you boil some rice or even just the liquid that you soak rice in beforehand. The water you use to wash, soak, or boil your rice in will turn cloudy and soak in all the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that rice has to offer.

You will then be left with the white liquid known as “am” or rice water.

If you are not convinced of the power of rice water, a lot of women in Asia even use it as an alternative for breastmilk or baby formula to feed to their baby. This was discovered by the poorer families who could not afford to buy baby formula regularly and could not produce the breastmilk on their own.

The safest alternative that they could find was to feed them the water that has been soaked with rice. It is very gentle on their tummies so they could easily digest it and it still contains vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that the baby needs.

Rice water can also be consumed as a dairy-free milk alternative by both adults and children. Those with milk allergies, lactose intolerance, or even just those who choose the dairy-free or vegan lifestyle sometimes choose rice milk or rice water to substitute its dairy counterpart.

This way, they still have some sort of “milky” substance in their diet and they are still getting a lot of benefits. It contains vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and amino acids that are all essential to your health.

If you are not really into DIYs that take a lot of time and effort, you will be glad to know that rice water is literally the easiest thing to make in the world. And it lasts you ages. All you have to do is soak your (cleaned) rice in some water for 15 to 30 minutes, strain out the rice, and keep the milky liquid in a jar.

The great thing about rice water is that it is also completely reusable! That one jar will last you a long while.

Uses and Benefits

As a Facial Cleanser

Rice water contains vitamin C, vitaiminA, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds, all of which are natural antioxidants that can lighten hyperpigmentation, reduce acne, get rid of impurities and free radicals, and reduce environmental damage that can cause early signs of aging. It also contains essential amino acids that are necessary to keep your skin supple and healthy.

How to Use This Method:

  1. Make your rice water by boiling your rice with an extra cup of water and then saving it in a jar or soaking your uncooked rice in some water for 30 minutes or so and saving that liquid in a jar. If you already have some rice water saved up, simply take that out of the fridge and use that.
  2. Splash some water on your face so that it is nice and damp.
  3. Get a cotton ball and dip it into your rice water.
  4. Gently massage the rice water soaked cotton ball onto your skin in circular motions for 60 seconds or more.
  5. Once you feel that your face is thoroughly cleansed (you can see all the dirt on the cotton ball you used), simply throw away your cotton ball andlet your face air dry.
  6. Close your jar of rice water back up and keep it inside the fridge.

As a Facial Toner

Most toners can contain harsh and irritating chemicals that may cause more harm than good. You may notice, if you have used toners before, that some tend to make your face feel some sort of burning sensation and cause you to peel.

Depending on the chemicals that that facial toner contains, this can be harmless and beneficial for your skin from time to time, but it definitely will not be good if you use it regularly. The skin on your face will become too thin and easily irritated.

Rice water is a great alternative to commercially produced toners out there. It contains powerful antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that tighten the pores, stimulate the blood flow, smoothen the skin, and give a brightening effect.

  2. Cleanse and wash your face thoroughly.
  3. Get a cotton ball or a cotton pad and dip it into the jar of rice water you made.
  4. Gently swipe the soaked cotton ball or cotton pad onto your face in an outwards motion.
  5. Leave the residue on your face to air dry.
  6. Close your jar of rice water back up and keep it inside the fridge.

As an Acne Treatment

It is kind of hard to believe that rice water can have a significant effect on acne. I mean, it’s so easy and simple to make and it hardly contains any ingredients. It is literally just rice and water. But, believe it! Rice water is actually one of the best home remedies for acne out there.

The antioxidants in rice water help flush out impurities, toxins, and free radicals that may be causing your breakouts. The amino acids in rice water then help to heal the damage that was caused by acne.

Rice water also has anti-inflammatory properties and a tightening effect on the pores that will reduce the inflammation of acne and prevent particles from getting into your pores, getting infected, and causing breakouts.

  2. Cleanse your face thoroughly.
  3. Soak a cotton pad or cotton ball in the rice water.
  4. Apply it all over your face and concentrate on gently rubbing or patting more of the liquid onto the areas that are most affected.
  5. Leave the rice water residue to air dry on your face.
  6. Close your rice water container back up and keep it refrigerated.

As an Eczema Treatment

Rice water can do an amazing amount of things. One of them including: treating your eczema. How, you ask? Rice water contains a component called starch.

Starch can reduce and ease the effects that eczema has on your skin. Rice water can combat the itchiness, inflammation, and help heal your skin with the vitamins and amino acids that it contains.

  2. Transfer some of your rice water into a bigger bowl and dip a soft washcloth in the liquid.
  3. Once your washcloth is saturated, apply it onto the affected areas with a gentle patting motion. Do this for a couple of minutes.
  4. Once you have applied the liquid onto the affected areas, let your skin air dry.
  5. Close your jar back up and keep it refrigerated.

For Irritated Skin or Rashes

A dermatological study was done and it shows that using rice water on atopic dermatitis can improve it significantly. This is because of the starch that rice water contains as well as its antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamins, and amino acids that help soothe and heal the skin quicker.

How to Use This Method:

  1. Take about a cup of rice and put it into an old sock or pantyhose.
  2. Once you have your pantyhose or sock full of the rice, tie it onto the faucet of your bathtub.
  3. Run yourself a cool bath and let the water from the faucet flow through the rice sock so the water can be infused with all the benefits of the rice.
  4. Once you are happy with the amount of water in your bath, remove the rice sock from underneath your faucet and tie it up tightly to secure it.
  5. Drop the rice sock completely into your bath and let it soak there for about 30 minutes. Knead and squeeze it to saturate the water even more.
  6. Get into your bath and soak in it for 15 minutes twice a day. You can continue kneading and squeezing your bag of rice to get more of the rice water out and gently pat the bag on the affected areas.
  7. After you are done, let your skin air dry.

As a Sunburn Treatment

Sunburnt skin is mostly made up of damaged, irritated, and inflamed skin. All of which are symptoms that rice water can help a lot with. The anti-inflammatory properties of rice water will reduce the redness and inflammation caused by the sunburn.

Amino acids and vitamins in rice water can help heal your skin faster and minimize the sun damage. The starch in rice water will help soothe the itch and irritation that you might be feeling.

  2. If you have just made your rice water, make sure that you refrigerate it for an hour or two so it is nice and cold. You can even put it in the freezer for a few minutes to make it even colder.
  3. Transfer your rice water into a bigger bowl and dip a soft washcloth into the liquid.
  4. Once saturated, apply the rice water onto the affected areas by gently placing the washcloth on it and letting it stay there for a few minutes. You can do this with multiple washcloths.
  5. Once you have let the rice water soak into all the areas that you are sunburnt, just let your skin air dry. Do this 2 to 3 times a day for full effectivity.
