How to Lighten Dark Lips Naturally

Dark lips are a much underrated, almost unnoticeable, but still relevant issue for skincare and beauty. If you have dark lips, then you might have often found yourself annoyed with the way they look and how makeup applies to them. However, what you may not know is that dark lips have more to them than just the way they look.

Everyone is built differently and another person may have a darker pigment in their lips than other people. People with a deep skin tone, for example, naturally have a darker tone to their lips than those with lighter skin.

If you notice that your lips look like they are an unhealthy color, most likely with a grayish tone to them, then it might mean that you are suffering from dark lips.

Dark lips can be caused by a number of things and they definitely do not look good. But what you may not know is that dark lips can be a symptom of skincare neglect and it means that they probably aren’t that healthy.

So no, dark lips aren’t just aesthetically annoying, they are a sign that your lips need some TLC. Want to find out how you can lighten your dark lips naturally and also make them healthier in the process? Here are a few ways.

Lemon Juice Treatment

Lemon juice is a well-known home remedy for a lot of things and it can also be the solution to your dark lips. The acidity and vitamin C in lemons have natural bleaching or lightening effect that can get rid of your dark lips fast.

Lemons are also known for casting out impurities in your body and it will have the same effect on your lips which will also help it to lighten more.

Simply squeeze out a little juice from a lemon, take some on your fingers, and start massaging it onto your lips. Be careful of little cuts, chaps, or irritation that is already on your lips, though! The lemon juice is definitely going to hurt if you get it on some sensitive parts.

Honey Treatment

Honey is another ingredient that is commonly found in a lot of skincare products because of its incredible moisturizing effect. It is amazing at softening, nourishing, and brightening the skin.

If your lips get dark because of lack of hydration, honey will be a great remedy to that. The brightening effect will also give your lips a lifted, lighter, and healthier look. Plus, they will feel so soft and get rid of any chapping or flakiness that you might be experiencing.

You can use honey to lighten and moisturize your lips in 2 different ways. First, you can take a cotton swab or cotton ball and soak it with some honey. Apply it to your lips and massage it in for about 3 to 4 minutes.

Another way is that you can just simply take some honey on your fingers, apply it on your lips, and leave it on overnight. Wash it off in the morning and you will get soft, smooth, and bright lips.

SPF Protection

One of the main and most common reason for having dark lips is sun damage. If you find that you are getting unusual dark pigments on your lips, it is very likely because they are sun damaged and you need to protect your lips with some SPF.

It is very important that you protect your skin, especially your face, from the sun by putting on some sunscreen. However, what some people may not realize is that you need some SPF on your lips, as well.

It is still part of your face, after all, and you can’t exactly slather on sunscreen all over your mouth. That would just be uncomfortable, taste bad (don’t eat sunscreen!), and no, sunscreen is probably not going to be that good for your lips.

What you can do is get yourself a lip balm with SPF in it. The higher the SPF, the better. If you like wearing lipstick out and about, you can just apply your lip balm on 30 minutes before you put your make up on so it will have time to absorb. That is, if you like a matte look on your lips.

Alternatively, you can just apply your lipstick over your lip balm right away for a moisturized, glossy look. The SPF in your lip balm will protect your lips from the harsh UV rays and prevent “melanin” pigments from forming on your lips.

Stop Smoking

This might be something really obvious and hard to do, but yes, smoking is definitely causing you to have dark lips and you definitely need to stop if you want it to go away. If you are a smoker and you have a big problem with dark lips, the only way you are going to banish that completely is to quit the bad habit.

Smoking leaves stains on both your lips and teeth of nicotine which can look like brown, yellow, and black spots. Besides not looking good, these stains are definitely very unhealthy for your lips, as well.

Quitting is something that can be quite difficult for a lot of people, but really, there is no use in emphasizing that over and over and just psyching yourself out in the process. If you want to do something and you set your mind to it, then you can definitely do it. Just go ahead and go for it!

Jump the gun and just quit!

Really try your hardest and make yourself a plan on how you are going to do it. When you’ve reached a personal goal, you can reward yourself to make the terms a bit sweeter by indulging on your favorite foods, buying yourself a new book, bag, watch, anything! I mean, hey, you are kind of saving by cutting back on the cigarettes, right?

Exfoliate Your Lips Regularly

Another pretty common cause of dark lips is the accumulation of dry or dead skin on the lips. If you have a pretty good skin routine of exfoliating your face and body regularly, then you will already know and notice the effects that dead skin can have.

You can get dark patches, hyperpigmentation can last longer, and your skin can look dull and feel rough to the touch. Same goes with your lips. If you don’t exfoliate them and let the dead skin linger, the surface of your lips can look dark and dull.

You can exfoliate your lips in 2 different ways:

  • Make your own homemade lip scrub. It’s pretty simple; just take about a tablespoon of honey and mix in some granulated sugar. Add the sugar in little by little until the honey is almost gone and you have yourself a sticky, rough mixture. Simply take some of the scrub on to your finger and start gently massaging it on to your lip. Do this for about 30 seconds and wash it off with some warm water.
  • Another way you can exfoliate your lips is to take some honey or petroleum jelly, apply it on to your lips, and leave it on overnight as you go to sleep. This will soften the skin on your lips and make it a lot easier to exfoliate. When you wake up, take your toothbrush and wet it with some warm water. Start brushing your lips gently with your toothbrush. Do this for about 30 seconds and then rinse off your face with warm water.

Cut Back on the Caffeine

If you drink a lot of coffee, tea, or sodas with caffeine in them, most likely, they are the cause of your dark lips. The caffeine in these drinks can stain your lips and teeth brown.

These can be lessened by exfoliating your lips regularly, however, stains can be very hard to remove if you keep drinking a lot of caffeine regularly.

You don’t have to completely quit your coffee or tea, however, it will be beneficial if you cut back on your intake. A coffee once or twice a day is alright, but if you drink 3 of more cups of it per day, then it is definitely time to lower your caffeine dosage and instead, get your energy from a healthy smoothie or snack.

Beetroot Treatment

Beetroots are one of the best kept beauty secrets from the olden days. Their vibrant color makes them perfect for making paint and using them as a natural lip tint. These guys will give your lips a really nice reddish tint that could give actual makeup a run for their money.

Besides the aesthetically pleasing look of the red tint it will give your lips, beetroot actually has some pretty powerful bleaching or lightening agents that can lighten the hyperpigmentation you have on your lips.

They also have moisturizing properties that will leave your lips feeling soft. So, not only will you have lighter lips, they will also have a pretty reddish tint to them and will feel really soft and smooth.

A way you can use beetroots is to get the juice out of them or blend them into a fine creamy consistency. Take your beetroot juice and apply it onto your lips before going to sleep. Leave them on overnight and in the morning, wash of the remaining residue with warm water. Leave the beetroot overnight on your lips and in the morning, wash off the remaining residue with warm water.

Overnight, your lips will absorb the beetroot juice that will help them lighten, soften, and give them a natural red color.

Rose Petals and Milk Treatment

Even just reading “rose petals and milk” makes you feel fancy and pampered. Rose petals are another well-loved beauty and skincare ingredient. Rose petal infused water is often used for facial mists or even bath water because it has an amazing moisturizing and antioxidant effect on the skin that will leave it feeling bright and fresh.

Milk also has an incredible moisturizing and lightening effect on the skin.

Rumor has it that Cleopatra used to bathe in a bathtub filled with pure milk. The rose petals’ moisturizing and antioxidant effect can help get rid of the dark pigments on your lips and the lightening properties of milk will help them look even brighter and healthier.

Start with bruising and mashing some rose petals with a spoon. Make sure that you get some of the “residue” from the rose petals to come out. Next, pour in your milk with the rose petals and mix them well together until you feel that both ingredients are fully incorporated. Take a cotton ball or tissue and soak it in your rose petal and milk mixture. Dab your lips with the soaked tissue or cotton ball for about 4 minutes until your lips absorb everything.

Once finished, do not wash off your lips; simply wipe it clean with another tissue. You will find that after doing this routine, your lips will feel nice and moisturized and even have a rosy pink tint to them.

Take a Look at the Lipstick/s That You Wear

Often times, dark lips can be caused by the cosmetics that you wear regularly on your lips. There is no telling for sure what ingredients may be causing this effect, but it can depend on the type of skin that you have on your lips.

If you find that you are getting darker lips than usual, try and stop using your usual lipstick for a while and see if there is any difference. If you notice your lips getting lighter without the constant use of that product, just completely dispose of it and start using another lipstick.

Most likely, there is an ingredient in your old lipstick that might be having a reaction to your lips causing them to darken.

Lighten Up!

What some people may not know is that dark lips can actually be a big insecurity for a lot of other people. Much like hyperpigmentation, blemishes, or scars, dark lips are something that can cause someone to feel bad about the way they look.

It can get difficult to go out without any makeup on, or let anyone see your bare lips.

Everyone has their own insecurities, but not to worry, dark lips are definitely something that you can get rid of. Not to confuse anyone though, dark lips are different from naturally darkly pigmented lips.

Their “darkness” caused by outside influences such as dead skin, toxins, smoking, and staining. This kind of discoloration means that your lips need some love and taking care of. Try out some of the methods listed above and let us know about your experience!
