The Product

NARS has been a well-known and well-loved brand in the high-end department of cosmetics. Their products don’t come cheap, but people adore this brand because of the amazing quality of their makeup. It’s definitely a brand that lots of people save up for and really, who doesn’t love a little luxury in their life once in a while, right?

When it comes to foundation, different people have different preferences. But one thing we can all agree on, a nice and healthy glow to the face is something that we all look for. It doesn’t have to be an all-out super dewy effect, but it’s always nice to have the skin on your face still look like skin, and not too flat, cakey, or dull.

The NARS Sheer Glow Foundation is one of NARS’ most boasted about product. It claims to give you a “glowing , satin-finish with sheer and buildable coverage”. It also even claims to have skincare benefits that hydrates, brightens, and improves the texture and radiance of the skin as you use it. Sounds amazing, right? No one really expects much skincare benefits from foundation themselves, but it’s a great bonus to put something on your face that will actually improve your skin.

This review is going to be about the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Mont Blanc, but it does have 20 other shades from fair to dark skin. NARS and the people who use this foundation have recommended it for normal to dry skin types. However, this review will be based on the experience of someone who has oily skin, those who have normal to dry skin may have a different experience.

The Packaging

The packaging, I have to say, is pretty dang classy. It looks like the typical bottle of foundation, but with a few touches that takes it from ordinary to sleek and elegant. It really does feel and look expensive. NARS is a pretty high-end brand, and this foundation definitely looks like it.

The foundation is in a glass bottle with the signature brand name and logo of NARS stamped into the front. The cap is a matte black, which gives the whole packaging a classier look. The bottle is square-shaped, which again, for some reason, just gives the packaging that much more appeal.

For the look of the packaging, NARS Sheer Glow gets an A+. However, for functionality, it gets a much lower grade. The often times problem of a bottle of foundation is that it usually is an inconvenient thing if it doesn’t come with a pump which the NARS Sheer Glow doesn’t have. It’s a shame because this foundation definitely doesn’t come cheap, so you would think that the price was enough for them to put the pump in to come with it. You can buy the pump separately, but really, the foundation is already a splurge, so buying the pump separately is just really inconvenient.

Without the pump, you’ll have to pour the product on to the back of your hand which will get real messy real fast especially as time goes on. It also makes it a whole lot easier to waste the product which is no good. If you have some empty foundation bottles lying around that come with a pump, try and screw it onto the NARS bottle. Chances are, most of the pumps and caps of foundation bottles are the same size so it might be compatible with NARS. Getting a pump on that bottle will save you a whole lot of trouble.

The Application

The consistency of this foundation is pretty runny, which isn’t a problem at all if the bottle had a pump. However, if you pour it on your hand, it’s much easier to pour a little bit too much and much harder to put it back in the bottle. Make sure to be careful when pouring the foundation out as to not waste any of the product.

Woes about the lack of pump aside, this foundation applies on the face like a dream. Despite being a runny consistency, a little of this stuff goes a very long way. NARS describes the coverage as sheer and buildable, but it’s definitely a medium to full coverage foundation. You can still sheer it out, but you will have to use a really little amount of product. One pump will already give your face a solid medium to full coverage, so if you want to sheer it out, go for half a pump or even less.

This foundation takes a little bit longer to blend but once it does, it blends in perfectly with the skin. It doesn’t set too quickly so you can keep blending until you’re happy with the coverage and the way it sits on the skin.

The Finish

The foundation has a satin finish and it really is quite gorgeous. It gives the face a nice glow but without being too dewy or shiny like most “glowy” foundations. Once you blend it in, it really does look just like skin. It looks super natural even with its great coverage. There’s really nothing that compares to the finish of this foundation, I think. NARS have perfected coverage and finish of the Sheer Glow.

Despite being a medium to full coverage foundation, the NARS Sheer Glow is still super lightweight. This may be because of the water based formula. It doesn’t feel like you’re wearing much makeup at all.

This foundation does set, but if you’re a bit oilier than the normal to dry skin that this foundation is recommended for, you might want to set your face with powder to lock the foundation in. Be sure not to put on too much though, just a light dusting of powder as to not ruin the finish of the foundation.

Lasting Power

The NARS Sheer Glow is a satin finish foundation that’s recommended for normal to dry skin. That in itself made me a bit skeptical on how this would last on (super!) oily skin, but I have to say that I am quite impressed!

It isn’t a matte foundation so I didn’t expect this to last all day on me, it definitely required a few touch ups, but I do think that it held up pretty well. It doesn’t melt off the face like “glowy” foundations often do. A light dusting of powder or a quick blot on the face will do the trick. Even after humidity and oiliness, the foundation stayed intact, which is really impressive especially since it’s not even meant for oily skin.

This foundation holds up pretty well through humidity, oil, and just life in general, but it isn’t fully transfer or smudge-proof. If you swipe your face on a tissue, you’ll find that the product does come off. It’s not that bad though. Not a lot of the product really came off, which again, is impressive especially for a satin finish foundation that isn’t made for oily skin.

The Verdict

If you’re all about that healthy, glowing skin look when it comes to makeup, then this foundation is going to be perfect for you. The finish it gives you is incomparable to any other foundation, really. It makes your skin look like your natural skin but 10x better and with a lot of coverage to conceal any redness or other discolorations on the face.

NARS Sheer Glow isn’t made for oily skin, but I still would recommend it even if you do have oily skin. A touch of powder will do just the trick, and the finish is so worth it even if you have to touch up or blot a few times during the day.

This foundation is on the high-end side of the spectrum so it definitely doesn’t come cheap, but I do believe that NARS have made a product that is so worth it. If you want to splurge on some luxurious makeup that is super high quality and will give you amazing coverage, lasting power, and finish, go ahead and treat yourself to the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation.
